9 things hiding in your Apple Health data (I found them in mine)

I have worn an Apple Watch since 2015. That is roughly 10 million data points: every heartbeat sample, every step, every night of sleep. And for years, all of it just... sat there. Recently I exported the whole archive and went digging - first for fun, then because the data kept surprising me. Here are nine things I found, from silly to genuinely important. Every one of them is probably hiding in your data too.

1. I've walked around the Earth 1.5 times

61,600 kilometers since 2014. That is 1.5 laps around the planet, or about 1,460 marathons. My best single day: 102,335 steps (a very long hiking day I still remember fondly - my feet do too).

2. My true half marathon PB - including the one hidden inside a longer run

Apple Health showed my best half marathon workout as 1:43:01. But when an AI analyzed the per-kilometer splits across all 900+ of my runs, it found my fastest 21.1 km segment - a 1:42:52 buried inside a slightly longer run. It also found that my fastest 5k pace happened in the middle of a 10k tempo run, not in any race.

3. A blood pressure trend I never noticed

Day to day, my blood pressure readings looked fine. Over 5 years, the trend was clear: my diastolic average drifted from 80 to 84. Nothing acute - but it moved me from “fine” to “keep an eye on this”, and it is on the agenda for my next checkup. Single readings hide what trends reveal.

4. My fitness age is about 20. My “sleep age” is not.

Comparing my metrics against population reference data: my VO2 Max (56.2) matches a fit 25-year-old, my HRV (71 ms) a 20-year-old, my heart rate recovery (30 bpm in a minute) likewise. I am 40.

Then the same data called out my 6.4 hours of average sleep and rising blood pressure as the things pulling in the other direction. A fair verdict: engine of a 25-year-old, maintenance habits of a stressed 40-year-old.

5. The pandemic is visible in my step count

2017: 9.5 million steps. 2021: 4.8 million. My yearly step chart shows lockdowns, job changes, and the arrival of our baby more honestly than any diary. Your data is a biography you wrote without noticing.

6. My VO2 Max told a comeback story

March: 42.5, after months of newborn-induced sleep deprivation. August, after five months of consistent training: 56.2 - the highest value in my entire 12-year history, at age 40. Without the historical export I would have only seen the scary dip, not the full arc.

7. My watch quietly logged breathing disturbances - and they're rising

1.3 per night, then 1.9, then 2.5 across three consecutive exports. Combined with chronically short sleep, that is a trend I would never have spotted in the Health app's daily view - and one worth discussing with a doctor if it continues.

8. Every single one of my 29 ECGs says the same reassuring thing

Sinus rhythm, every time, since 2019. Boring is beautiful. Having all my ECG recordings in one exported table - instead of scrolling one by one through the app - turned 29 isolated readings into one clear sentence: nothing to worry about here.
